The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, a key water treatment facility serving communities along Accra’s eastern coast.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company said the decision was taken due to unresolved contractual issues and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance needed to ensure the plant’s safe and efficient operation.
The desalination plant, commissioned to supplement the capital’s water supply, has over the years provided potable water to residents of Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La, and neighboring areas.
GWL assured the public that contingency plans have been activated to reduce the impact of the shutdown.

These include rerouting water from other treatment facilities and prioritizing essential service institutions such as hospitals, schools, and health centers.
“The company remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers,” the statement said, adding that management “deeply regrets the inconvenience caused” and is working to expedite the resolution of the issues.
GWL further indicated that regular updates on the progress and timelines for restoration will be communicated through its official website, social media pages, traditional media outlets, and community engagement channels.
The Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, one of the few of its kind in West Africa, has faced several operational and financial challenges since its commissioning, prompting intermittent shutdowns over the years.
