The Accra Circuit Court 6 has ordered the remand of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a key member of the Democracy Hub group, along with twelve others, for a two-week period.
This decision follows their arrest during a demonstration over the weekend, leading to their appearance in court.
The demonstrators, who are advocates for social and political reforms, were apprehended after participating in a protest organized by Democracy Hub.
However, one of the thirteen individuals slated to appear before the court was absent during the proceedings.
After hearing the case, the court ruled that the accused should remain in custody for the next two weeks to allow for further investigations.
They are scheduled to reappear before the court on October 8, 2024.
The arrest and subsequent remand have sparked reactions, with various civil society organizations monitoring the case closely as it unfolds.
Family members and friends of Oliver Barker-Vormawor and his fellow demonstrators have expressed dissatisfaction with the Accra Circuit Court 6’s decision to remand them in custody for two weeks.
Their frustration was palpable after the court's ruling, which has left the activists facing extended time in detention.
This case continues to draw significant public attention due to the political undertones surrounding the Democracy Hub's advocacy activities and Barker-Vormawor's prominent role as a social activist.
