President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a newly constructed 85-bed Christian Tetteh Yohuno complex ward at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare for police officers, their dependants and the public.

At the ceremony, the President reiterated his administration’s intention to bring the hospital’s outstanding expansion project to completion.

The project is expected to increase the hospital’s bed capacity by 106 and introduce additional medical services, including an intensive care unit, an accident and emergency centre, operating theatres, consultation rooms and modern diagnostic facilities.

President Mahama also announced the provision of two ambulances to improve the hospital’s ability to respond to emergencies and transport patients requiring urgent medical attention.

Taking his turn, Minister for Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the new ward represented an important step towards improving the welfare of security personnel.

He emphasised that those responsible for safeguarding the country deserved dependable healthcare services and adequate institutional support.

He commended the President for backing initiatives aimed at upgrading medical infrastructure and improving conditions within the Ghana Police Service.

According to the Minister, the facility would extend its benefits beyond police personnel to their relatives and other members of the public who seek treatment at the hospital.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, welcomed the addition, noting that the physical well-being of police officers was essential to maintaining an effective and professional police service.

He highlighted the need for accessible medical care to support personnel in carrying out their responsibilities.

The new ward houses distinct medical and surgical units for male and female patients, together with separate paediatric wards for boys and girls.

Its facilities include patient-monitoring systems, diagnostic equipment, a laboratory within the complex, a pharmacy and other essential medical support services.

The inauguration adds to ongoing efforts to modernise healthcare facilities serving Ghana’s security agencies. The completion of the broader expansion project is expected to further strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide medical care to police personnel and the public.
