Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was involved in a severe road accident on the Kumasi-Accra highway on Friday.
The incident occurred as Mr. Ahiagbah was traveling from Accra to Kumasi when his vehicle collided with an oncoming truck.
Authorities report that the collision happened around 3 PM near the Nkawkaw stretch of the highway, a section notorious for frequent accidents.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the crash as "horrific," noting that the impact left both vehicles severely damaged.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and Ahiagbah was transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Hospital officials have confirmed that he is in stable condition but are conducting thorough examinations to rule out any serious injuries.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and has been taken into custody for further questioning by the police.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident may have been caused by a brake failure on the truck, although this is yet to be confirmed.
In a statement, the NPP expressed deep concern for Ahiagbah’s well-being and called for prayers for his swift recovery. “We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and are closely monitoring Richard’s condition. We urge the public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The accident has sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures on Ghana’s highways, with many highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better maintenance of vehicles to prevent such incidents in the future.
This incident comes at a critical time for the NPP as the party prepares for its upcoming congress.
Mr. Ahiagbah, a key figure in the party’s communication strategy, was en route to Kumasi for a series of meetings aimed at finalizing preparations for the event.
Further updates on Richard Ahiagbah’s condition and the ongoing investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
