National Road Safety Authority records 1,237 deaths in first half of 2024

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) revealed that 1,237 people lost their lives in road accidents across the nation from January to June 2024.

This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

The provisional national traffic crash and casualty statistics provide a grim snapshot of the state of road safety in the country.

According to the NRSA, a total of 6,653 road traffic crashes were reported during the first half of the year.

These incidents involved 11,283 vehicles, spanning various categories including private cars, commercial vehicles, and motorbikes.

The consequences of these crashes were devastating, with a total of 8,798 casualties recorded. Out of these, 1,237 were fatalities, while 7,561 individuals sustained injuries of varying severity.

The NRSA attributes the majority of these accidents to reckless driving behaviors, particularly wrongful overtaking and the failure to adhere to traffic signs.

"This spike in road accidents and fatalities is a matter of grave concern. The data clearly indicates that driver behavior is a significant factor, and there is an urgent need for increased public awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws."

The statistics further highlight the distribution of accidents among different types of vehicles.

While private cars and commercial vehicles were heavily involved, motorbikes and cycles also contributed significantly to the total number of crashes.
