Brazilian football legend, Marta Vieira da Silva, a six-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year, has announced her engagement to her partner and Orlando Pride teammate, Carrie Lawrence.
The couple, who began dating in 2022, got engaged during a romantic picnic where Marta proposed.
The engagement was celebrated on Instagram, with the pair sharing photos of the special moment, including a snapshot of Marta placing a ring on Carrie’s finger.
Marta, 38, who recently competed in the Olympics, where Brazil secured a silver medal after losing to the United States, is now set to marry her 27-year-old partner.
Carrie Lawrence, who has represented the United States at the U19 level, traveled to France to support Marta and the Brazilian team during the Olympics.
Earlier this year, Marta announced her intention to retire from international football, declaring that the Olympics would be her final tournament with the national team.
"If I go to the Olympics, I will enjoy every moment, because, regardless of whether I go to the Olympics or not, this is my last year with the national team,” she said.
“There will be no more Marta from 2025 in the national team as an athlete. I am very calm about this because I see with great optimism this development that we are having concerning young athletes.”
Following her extended break after the Olympics, Marta is expected to rejoin Orlando Pride later this month as she looks forward to both her upcoming nuptials and her next chapter beyond international football.
