The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged the public to strictly observe basic COVID-19 preventive protocols, including maintaining social distancing and wearing face masks, particularly in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, following a recent spike in COVID-19 cases within the University of Ghana community.
In a public health advisory issued on Thursday, June 26, the GHS confirmed a resurgence of mild COVID-19 cases, currently limited to the University campus.
Although no hospital admissions have been recorded, health authorities are collaborating with university officials to contain the situation and review public health measures as necessary.
The advisory comes despite the World Health Organisation’s earlier decision to lift COVID-19’s classification as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The GHS, however, stressed that the pandemic threat remains, with sporadic outbreaks likely to follow seasonal trends globally.

“Maintaining social distancing, wearing face masks — especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces — frequent handwashing, and staying home when unwell remain critical steps to prevent transmission,” the statement read.
The GHS reminded the public of common COVID-19 symptoms to look out for, including fever, chills, cough, sore throat, weakness, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell.
Authorities have assured both the University of Ghana community and the general public that all necessary interventions are underway to manage the outbreak and prevent its spread.
The Ghana Health Service further called for continued vigilance and adherence to recommended preventive measures to safeguard public health.
