John Mahama pledges to scrap 10% withholding tax on sports betting if elected president

John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a significant promise to Ghanaians, particularly those engaged in sports betting.

In a bold statement made during a townhall meeting at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Monday, Mahama vowed to remove the controversial 10% withholding tax on sports betting if he is elected as President in the 2024 general elections.

Addressing a lively crowd, Mahama criticized the tax as punitive and burdensome, arguing

that it unfairly targets young people who engage in sports betting as a form of entertainment and livelihood.

He assured attendees that his administration would prioritize the needs of the youth and create an environment that fosters growth rather than stifles it with excessive taxation.

"The 10% withholding tax on sports betting will be removed once I become President," Mahama declared to resounding applause.

He emphasized that his government would focus on more sustainable ways to generate revenue without imposing undue hardships on citizens.

"We must create an economy that works for everyone, not one that punishes the very people it is supposed to serve," he added.

Mahama's promise to scrap the withholding tax is likely to resonate with many young Ghanaians, who have expressed frustration over the tax's impact on their winnings.

The tax, introduced as part of the government’s broader revenue mobilization strategy, has been a source of controversy since its implementation, with critics arguing that it disproportionately affects those who can least afford it.

In addition to his commitment to abolish the sports betting tax, Mahama also reiterated his intention to scrap the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy), another tax that has been widely criticized by Ghanaians.

"The E-Levy will also be scrapped when I become President," he stated, reinforcing his broader economic agenda to relieve Ghanaians of what he described as unnecessary financial burdens.

Mahama’s announcements have set the tone for what promises to be a keenly contested election, with taxation and economic management likely to be key issues. As the campaign season heats up,

Mr. Mahama's pledges on tax reforms are expected to be central to his bid to reclaim the presidency, as he seeks to position himself as the candidate who will deliver economic relief and support for the average Ghanaian.

The townhall meeting at the Bukom Boxing Arena was part of Mahama’s ongoing engagement with various communities across the country, where he continues to outline his vision for a more inclusive and equitable Ghana.

With the 2024 elections on the horizon, Mahama's promises, particularly on tax reform, will be closely watched by both his supporters and critics alike.
