The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a fresh ultimatum to the government, demanding the full implementation of their Conditions of Service (CoS) by the end of July 2025 or risk industrial action.

The renewed warning follows the abrupt suspension of a scheduled meeting on June 26, 2025, which was expected to involve government representatives, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, and the leadership of the GRNMA.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, expressed the Association’s displeasure over the postponement, which she described as “disrespectful and a sign of bad faith.”

“The strike was suspended in good faith, and we expect nothing less than reciprocity,” she stated.

"The rescheduling of the meeting, in our view, is in bad faith as it may further delay the implementation of the agreed items.”

The GRNMA had earlier suspended its nationwide strike on June 13, 2025, following interventions by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health.

A follow-up meeting was scheduled for June 26, but was later postponed due to the absence of some key stakeholders, prompting the Committee to officially communicate the deferral to GRNMA leadership.

Despite acknowledging the Select Committee’s efforts, the GRNMA President maintained that the government must deliver on its commitments, particularly the four key items previously agreed upon.

These include:

  • Fuel and uniform allowances

  • Book and research allowance

  • An 8% non-basic allowance

“We demand the implementation of these four agreed items not later than July 2025. This is non-negotiable. Any attempt to further delay the implementation will compel us to advise ourselves accordingly,” Madam Ampofo warned.

She further noted that the Association is open to discussions on the implementation of additional items in the CoS, provided they are clearly scheduled for no later than January 2026.

“We demand that these timelines are clearly captured and signed off at the upcoming meeting on July 10, 2025,” she emphasized.

The GRNMA says failure by government to meet these demands will leave the Association with no choice but to take further action before the end of July 2025.
