The Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, His Royal Majesty Togbega Gabusu VII has spearheaded a significant tree planting exercise at St. Teresa’s College of Education, Hohoe, as part of the Green Ghana initiative.
This initiative, aimed at raising national awareness and fostering coordinated action, seeks to address the country's damaged landscape through widespread afforestation efforts.
The event garnered robust support from the Gbi people, illustrating their collective commitment to environmental sustainability.
“We must ensure that our forest is managed sustainably,” Togbega Gabusu VII emphasized.
He urged other chiefs within the Volta Region and beyond to lead similar efforts in their communities, highlighting the vital role of tree planting in combating climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation.
The ceremony featured a speech from Mr. Francis Fiakpui, the Municipal Chief Executive, who announced an ambitious plan to plant 30,000 trees in the Hohoe Municipality.
This includes 100 cashew and mahogany trees, integral to this year’s Green Ghana Day theme.
Mr. Fiakpui assured attendees that the planted trees would be well nurtured and protected, stressing the importance of community involvement in ensuring the success of the initiative.
In his address, Mr. Frank Adigbo, a representative from the Ministry, encouraged the Gbi residents to participate fully in the tree-planting project.
He underscored the initiative’s goal of planting 10 million trees nationwide, calling for sustained efforts beyond the planting phase to ensure the trees thrive and contribute to the restoration of Ghana’s forest reserves.
Mr. Samuel Bruce Kpeglo of St. Teresa’s College of Education, speaking on behalf of the Principal, Prof. (Mrs.) Scholastica Azuah, articulated the broader significance of the initiative.
He described the tree planting effort as a reflection of the community's commitment to the environment and a source of inspiration for taking actionable steps toward a greener future.
He expressed gratitude for hosting the event and optimism about the long-term impact of the trees planted.
The Green Ghana initiative, championed by the government and supported by traditional leaders and local communities, represents a crucial step in Ghana’s environmental conservation efforts.
By planting and nurturing trees, the initiative aims to create a lasting legacy for future generations, contributing to the global fight against climate change and fostering sustainable development.
