The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025.

This directive follows a meeting between the National Executive of the Union and the Minister of Transport, aimed at addressing public concerns over high transport costs despite recent reductions in fuel prices.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3news, the Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the decision.

“We just had a meeting with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%,” he stated.

Alhaji Moro explained that the decision was influenced by a recent drop in fuel prices, which have declined by approximately 18%.

He noted that traditionally, the Union calculates fare adjustments by taking a third of the fuel price change.

“The fuel price has dropped by, let’s say 18%. So the tradition we do is that we divide it by 3 and use one-third of it. But we decided on 15% based on fuel price,” he said.

"We are also hopeful that our brothers in the spare parts business will reduce their prices as well.”

He emphasized that the fare reduction was implemented without waiting for other cost components, such as spare parts and maintenance fees, to drop.

“We want to place on record that we did not wait for the other components of our cost build-up to reduce before the 15% reduction,” he added.

Alhaji Moro further warned that all members of the Union are expected to comply with the new fare structure without exception.

“If your Union has decided, you have no option than to comply,” he cautioned.

The move has been widely welcomed by passengers and transport sector stakeholders who have been advocating for fairer pricing in the wake of declining fuel costs.
