The Ghana Armed Forces has announced that government has approved the payment of gratuity arrears to retired military personnel under the implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.

According to a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the decision follows renewed engagements between the current Military High Command and the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Defence.

The discussions were aimed at resolving a five-year impasse over the gratuity computation formula under CI 129.

The consultations have resulted in a two-year phased implementation roadmap to clear the outstanding arrears.

Under the approved arrangement, all personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears calculated based on the new gratuity formula.

Payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027, with the first tranche scheduled to be released by close of business on Friday, February 27, 2026.

A total of 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers are expected to benefit from the payment of the arrears.

The statement further indicated that all future retirements will be processed fully in accordance with CI 129 to ensure timely and accurate payment of gratuities.

The Military High Command expressed appreciation to government for its support in resolving the long-standing issue, noting that the development brings closure to a matter that had remained unsettled since 2020 and guarantees that affected personnel receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.
