The Ministry of Health has confirmed the disbursement of GHS 462 million in allowances to nursing trainees across Ghana, fulfilling a key campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama.

The payment, which covers a six-month period, will benefit approximately 120,000 nursing students enrolled in various Nurses Training Colleges nationwide. Disbursement of the funds began earlier today and is expected to continue through next Friday.

In a statement issued by the Ministry, the initiative was described as a crucial step in supporting the welfare of trainee nurses and enhancing motivation among future healthcare professionals.

“This development underscores the government’s commitment to improving the health sector by investing in the training of its critical human resource,” said Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and spokesperson for the Ministry of Health.

The release of the funds forms part of a broader effort to ensure financial stability for students during their clinical training, while also aiming to retain more nurses in the public healthcare system upon graduation.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to President Mahama for “delivering on his word” and commended all stakeholders who played a role in facilitating the timely release and distribution of the allowances.

The Ministry also reiterated its dedication to working closely with nursing institutions to enhance the quality of healthcare education across the country.
