President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability with the inauguration of the GoldBod Taskforce, a dedicated team established to combat illegal gold trading and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
Speaking at the official launch in Accra on Tuesday, President Mahama emphasized that the task force will function with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
“Every member of the task force will operate under strict oversight,” he stated.
"All officers will be required to wear body cameras during operations, and their vehicles will be GPS tracked and monitored in real-time.”
He further announced that no operation will be conducted without proper authorization.
"A written warrant from the CEO is required before any field operation is undertaken,” he noted, explaining that the directive is intended to prevent arbitrary actions and instill discipline within the enforcement structure.
The GoldBod Taskforce has been assigned the crucial mandate of addressing illegal small-scale mining—commonly referred to as galamsey—which continues to pose severe threats to Ghana’s rivers, forests, and mineral revenue.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the taskforce will play a pivotal role in recovering lost revenue from gold smuggling and securing long-term benefits for the state and its people.
The taskforce is expected to begin full-scale operations in the coming weeks.
