Ghana Police affirms readiness to uphold law and order during NDC nationwide protest

The Ghana Police Service has affirmed its readiness to uphold law and order during a nationwide protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

The protest, set to take place across all 16 regional capitals, stems from the party's concerns over alleged irregularities in the voter register managed by the Electoral Commission (EC).

On Monday, September 16, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs, assured that the police are fully equipped and prepared to provide adequate security throughout the demonstrations.

She emphasized the importance of public safety, while also reminding the NDC of their obligations under the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), which governs public demonstrations.

NDC leaders have indicated their intention to submit petitions to the EC’s regional offices and headquarters in Accra, demanding immediate action to address what they describe as serious flaws in the voter register.

The protest reflects the party’s growing frustration with the EC’s handling of voter registration ahead of the upcoming 2024 general elections.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi called on both demonstrators and the general public to ensure that the protests remain peaceful, reiterating that the police will not hesitate to enforce the law should any disruptions occur.
