Professor Ransford Gyampo, Professor of Political Science & Founding Director of the Centre for European Studies, University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has suggested a controversial solution to the funding issues plaguing the National Cathedral project.
He proposes that President Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia be frozen and redirected towards the project.
Professor Gyampo, a respected academic and political commentator, voiced his opinion in response to the ongoing financial challenges faced by the National Cathedral initiative.
He argues that reallocating the funds could help address the significant financial shortfalls and expedite the completion of the project.
"The National Cathedral is an important symbol for our nation, but it has been hampered by financial difficulties. If possible, we should freeze President Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia and use the money to refill the financial hole," Professor Gyampo stated.
The National Cathedral project, a flagship initiative of President Akufo-Addo, has faced numerous delays and budget overruns since its inception.
The proposal to use presidential ex-gratia – a lump sum payment given to high-ranking public officials upon retirement – has sparked debate among political analysts and the public.
Critics argue that such a move could set a dangerous precedent and undermine the sanctity of ex-gratia payments, which are enshrined in the nation's constitution.
Supporters, however, believe it could be a pragmatic solution to ensure the timely completion of the cathedral, which is envisioned as a national symbol of unity and faith.
The government has yet to officially respond to Professor Gyampo’s suggestion. However, it has reiterated its commitment to the completion of the National Cathedral, emphasizing its significance to the nation’s cultural and religious heritage.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether this proposal will gain traction or spark further controversy within Ghana’s political and public spheres.
