Electricity supply interrupted as National Grid suffers system disturbance

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a major power system disturbance in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, resulting in electricity supply interruptions across parts of the country.

According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., triggering the simultaneous tripping of several power generation plants connected to the national grid. The disruption affected electricity supply to customers in various parts of Ghana.

In a statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section, GRIDCo said it immediately activated its established system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working around the clock in collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector to restore electricity to affected areas as quickly as possible.

The company emphasized that while efforts are underway to restore power, safety remains its top priority throughout the restoration process.

GRIDCo also disclosed that a comprehensive technical investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the disturbance and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The transmission company apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused by the outage and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of consumers.

"We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available," the statement said.

The company assured the public that it will continue to keep Ghanaians informed as investigations progress and restoration efforts are completed.
