Member of Parliament (MP), Madina Constituency, Francis Sosu writes "Death Penalty Abolition in Ghana: Criminal Offenses (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1101) (Death Penalty Abolition for ordinary crimes) in force
LIFE SENTENCES GIVEN to 12 out of 14 persons.
A jury has delivered a unanimous guilty verdict for 12 out of the 14 persons standing trial for the death of military officer, Major Maxwell Mahama.
They were convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder… but we’re all sentenced to Life Imprisonment.
Before the July 2023 amendment championed by the MADINA MP and presidential assent of the law on 2nd August, 2023, their convictions would have attracted Death Penalty.
Total number of persons on death row now is 181, plus the new convicts on High Treason making the number 187.
By this the convicted prisoners won’t be sent to condemned cells.
They will serve as lifers in the regular prison"
