Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana halts planned 15% transport fare hike

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced the suspension of a planned 15% increase in transport fares.

This decision was initially communicated on July 17, with the fare hike scheduled to take effect on July 22.

The association attributed the planned increase to rising costs of fuel and essential spare parts necessary for maintaining transport services.

However, the announcement quickly drew criticism and concern from various stakeholders, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

The GPRTU urged commuters to disregard the fare hike, highlighting the potential economic strain it would place on the public.

David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, provided further context in an interview.

He explained that the fare increase was suspended to avoid adding to the public's financial hardships during a time of economic difficulty.

"We understand the burden that this fare increase would have placed on the public, especially in these trying times," Mr. Agboado stated.

"Our intention was never to cause undue hardship but to address the rising operational costs. However, after careful consideration, we decided that suspending the increase was the most responsible course of action."

The initial announcement of the fare hike raised significant concern among commuters, who are already grappling with the rising cost of living.

The planned 15% increase threatened to further strain their finances, particularly for those who rely on public transportation daily.
