Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential candidate, has officially conceded defeat in the 2024 Presidential election.

He extended his heartfelt congratulations to former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), acknowledging the will of the people as reflected in the provisional results.

Addressing the nation on Sunday, December 8, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had personally called Mr. Mahama to commend him on his victory.

He emphasized his unwavering commitment to ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition of power, demonstrating his respect for Ghana’s democratic values.

“I have spoken to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him on his victory. The people of Ghana have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” Dr. Bawumia declared in his address.

The concession speech signals the conclusion of a fiercely contested election and underscores the importance of national unity as the incoming administration prepares to take the reins of governance.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve as Vice President and reiterated his dedication to the nation’s democratic principles.

“I thank the good people of Ghana for the honor to serve. Let us continue to work together to ensure peace, progress, and development for our beloved country.”

Although official results are yet to be certified by the Electoral Commission, provisional figures indicate that Mr. Mahama holds a commanding lead, with several NPP parliamentary seats also lost in key constituencies.

As the nation awaits the EC's final declaration, Dr. Bawumia’s concession sets a tone of reconciliation and collaboration, affirming Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
