Reports coming in indicates that the grandmother to former US President Barack Obama, Mama Sarah Obama is dead.
Mama Sarah died on Monday morning at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu.
Her demise was confirmed by her daughter, Marsat Obama, who told the Nation that her mother died at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga
Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu at 4.45am on Monday morning. She had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning.
She passed away aged 99 years.
Mama Sarah, as she was fondly called, passed away while receiving treatment.
She was the third wife of President Obama’s paternal grandfather.
Her daughter Marsat Onyango said her mother had been in poor health for some time.
“It’s true she went to be with her Lord,” Marsat said on phone overcome with emotion.
Mama Sarah had taken up an initiative to care for destitute children as well as helping the widows in Siaya’s Kogelo village.
The family is making arrangements to have her buried today (Monday) at the Muslim Cemetery in Kisumu.
"We are trying to see whether we shall be able to bury her today and if not, we shall bury her tomorrow," a relative said.
Contacted, Mr Malik Obama, the former US president's Kenyan half-brother, told the Nation that he would comment on the matter later.
"I have no comment for now, I've just woken up," he said by phone on Monday morning.
The 44th US President had close ties to his grandmother and last visited her at the family in K'Ogello in July 2018.
