The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), led by Her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde, Former President of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, has lauded Ghana for its unwavering commitment to democratic principles and good governance.
Speaking during the Mission’s press briefing in Accra, Madam Zewde hailed the successful conduct of the recent general elections and the exemplary leadership displayed by key political figures.
The AUEOM outlined several recommendations to enhance Ghana’s electoral process, emphasizing transparency, inclusivity, and accessibility.
Among the key recommendations were:
Stakeholder Consultations: The Electoral Commission was urged to maintain and enhance regular stakeholder engagements to foster trust and inclusiveness in the electoral process.
Ballot Security: Measures should be strengthened to prevent the production of counterfeit ballot papers, including the incorporation of advanced security features.
Polling Stations: The Mission called for an increase in polling stations in sparsely populated areas to reduce travel distances, particularly in rural communities.

Signage: Improved directional signage at polling stations was also recommended to ensure voters can easily locate and access polling centers.
Her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde commended the National Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his display of statesmanship in accepting the election results based on his party’s tally and conceding defeat before the official declaration of results.
“Dr. Bawumia’s gracious acknowledgment of the election results and his congratulatory message to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama exemplify the spirit of democracy and the values of Pan-Africanism,” she stated.
She further congratulated President-Elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory and extended her best wishes for his tenure.
“Ghana remains a beacon of democracy and a leader in upholding the legacy of our forefathers by prioritizing the country and its people. We look forward to seeing President Mahama enhance democracy, governance, and development in Ghana,” she added.
The AUEOM’s observations and recommendations reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a trailblazer in democratic governance in Africa, a feat that continues to inspire the region and the continent.

The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG), led by His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, Former President of Botswana, has praised Ghana for conducting peaceful and transparent elections.
Dr. Masisi highlighted Ghana’s commitment to democracy, stability, and inclusivity.
The group observed pre-election activities, special voting, and Election Day processes across ten regions.
Despite isolated incidents of violence, the elections were largely peaceful, with polling officials following procedures diligently.
The professionalism of the Electoral Commission (EC), the National Election Security Taskforce, and the media’s balanced coverage were particularly commended.
Dr. Masisi also lauded Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his concession speech, which helped de-escalate tensions, and congratulated President-Elect John Dramani Mahama on his re-election.
“Our final report, with recommendations for improving future elections, will be published soon,” Dr. Masisi stated, adding that Ghana’s electoral process remains a model for Africa and the world.

The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, led by His Excellency Mohammed Namadi Sambo, GCON, has declared Ghana’s 2024 general elections as largely peaceful, credible, and reflective of the will of the people.
The Mission commended Ghanaians for their active participation in the December 7 polls, which saw the election of a President and 276 Members of Parliament across 40,647 polling stations nationwide.
"The voting process was conducted in an orderly manner, with polling stations opening on time, adequate security presence, and measures in place to ensure accessibility for Persons with Disabilities," said H.E. Namadi Sambo.
Observers noted that 99% of polling stations ensured ballot secrecy, and party agents from the two major parties, NPP and NDC, were present in over 89% of polling centres visited.
The Mission also praised the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his leadership and lauded the ruling party’s candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, for conceding defeat before the official announcement of results.
The President-elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, was congratulated on his victory.
The ECOWAS Mission extended its gratitude to Ghanaian institutions, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and civil society organizations, for their efforts in ensuring credible and peaceful elections.
"Ghana remains a beacon of democracy in the West African sub-region," H.E. Namadi Sambo emphasized, urging continued commitment to peace and democratic principles.
