Peter Akwasi Mensah, a member of the NDC National Communication Team, has strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, accusing them of lacking the political will to effectively combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Mr. Mensah expressed his dismay over the deteriorating state of Ghana’s water bodies, attributing the environmental degradation to the government's failure in curbing galamsey activities.
He lamented that while illegal mining existed under the previous NDC administration, the extent of environmental damage, particularly to rivers such as Pra and Tano, has worsened under the current government.
Mr. Mensah highlighted that despite setting up various committees to address the galamsey menace, these bodies have allegedly been complicit, aiding the very activities they were supposed to fight.
"The NPP government has not only failed to stop galamsey but has also mismanaged the situation to the point where our natural resources are being destroyed at an alarming rate. It is evident that President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia do not have the political will to tackle this issue effectively," Mr. Mensah stated.
He further criticized the government's response to criticisms, particularly regarding comments made by Kweku Boahen, arguing that the NPP should focus on their failure rather than deflecting blame.
Mr. Mensah also reiterated the NDC’s commitment to engaging mining communities in sustainable practices, including reforestation initiatives, and emphasized John Mahama’s vision for a more responsible approach to mining in Ghana.
"The NPP has had eight years to address galamsey, yet they have only deepened the crisis. It is time for Ghanaians to see through their failures and recognize the need for real leadership that prioritizes the environment and the well-being of its citizens," Mr. Mensah concluded.
