Akufo-Addo appoints Afenyo-Markin as new ECG Board Chairman

President Akufo-Addo has appointed Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, as the new Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This appointment was officially communicated in a letter signed by Nana Asante Bediatuo, the Executive Secretary to the President.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin will succeed Herbert Krapa, who has been appointed as the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry. Mr. Krapa had previously taken over the position from Keli Gadzekpo, who resigned on March 26.

The letter announcing the appointment reads: "The President of the Republic has nominated Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin (MP), Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited."

The letter also instructed the necessary steps to formalize the appointment: "Kindly take the necessary steps to give effect to the President's nomination in accordance with the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992) and the Regulations of the Company."

Mr. Afenyo-Markin, known for his significant contributions to parliamentary proceedings and his leadership within the Majority Caucus, is expected to bring his extensive experience and strategic vision to the ECG Board.

His appointment comes at a crucial time as the ECG continues to navigate the challenges of improving electricity distribution and addressing the energy needs of the country.

The transition in leadership at the ECG Board underscores the government's ongoing commitment to strengthening the management of key state institutions. Mr. Afenyo-Markin's appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his expertise in governance and public administration to enhance the operations of the ECG.

As the new Board Chairman, Mr. Afenyo-Markin will be responsible for providing oversight and strategic direction to the ECG, ensuring that it meets its mandate of delivering reliable and efficient electricity services to Ghanaians. His leadership is anticipated to foster greater accountability and drive reforms aimed at improving the financial and operational performance of the company.

The President's appointment of Mr. Afenyo-Markin reflects confidence in his capabilities to lead the ECG through its next phase of development, addressing both current challenges and future opportunities in the energy sector.
