A day meant for jubilation turned to sorrow when a vehicle drove into a crowd of Liverpool Football Club supporters celebrating the team’s championship triumph during a trophy parade.
The incident, which occurred near the end of the celebration, left dozens injured, including several children.
Video footage captured in the aftermath showed shocked fans surrounding the car involved in the collision.
UK police confirmed that the vehicle remained at the scene and that a 53-year-old British man was arrested in connection with the incident.
Assistant Chief Constable Jennifer Sims of Merseyside Police said, “We believe this to be an isolated incident. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”
The North West Ambulance Service responded swiftly to the scene.
David Kitchin, Head of Service, revealed that four children were among the injured.
"Sadly, four of the injured were children who were enjoying the day with their friends and their families. Our teams treated 20 patients on-site for minor injuries, and 27 were transported to hospital. We believe two of those, including one child, have sustained serious injuries,” he stated.
Liverpool Football Club issued a statement expressing deep concern. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” the club said.
What began as a moment of unity and joy for the Liverpool community has now been overshadowed by heartbreak, as fans and families grapple with the aftermath of this unexpected tragedy.
